Riverkeeper Water Quality Portal
The Riverkeeper Water Quality Monitoring portal is a public facing platform displaying monitoring information collected by the Riverkeeper and its partners around the Hudson River Estuary, showing the public where it is safe to swim, how clean their drinking water is, the health of the region’s fish and how climate change (coming soon!) is impacting the water around the region. The platform combines monitoring data with related publicly available but difficult to access datasets. At a time when essential environmental monitoring information is being removed from the public domain in the U.S., we’re especially proud to help make this data accessible. Careful design of cartography and user interaction as well as thoughtful web development support clear communication and understanding of this complex data from multiple sources across a wide and diverse geography.
This project was supported by federal funding secured by Senator Charles Schumer:
“We cannot turn back the clock when it comes to the safety of our drinking water, and the millions of New Yorkers who rely on the Hudson River. As the Trump administration slashes funding and cuts staff at the EPA, our waterways are at increased risk for pollution and degradation. From the New York Harbor to the Adirondacks, I say we need to invest in protecting New York’s waterways and keeping toxic PFAS and other dangerous chemicals out of our drinking water. That is why I am thrilled to join with Riverkeeper to launch a new online Water Quality Portal to collect data, fill in the gaps, and help arm communities with the resources they need to ensure our waterways remain clean.” — Senator Charles Schumer
