The Panorama of the City of New York is a scale model of all five boroughs, built for the 1964 World's Fair. Visitors see it only from a walkway around its edge. The Queens Museum wanted to explore what a digital version could add.
We designed and built a prototype 3D web tool from a 3D scan of the Panorama and archival images. Visitors can explore parts of the model they can't see from the walkway, learn about its history, and add their own stories to a participatory map. The platform is set up so location-based stories and projects can be added later. The project was covered by the New York Times in 2023.
