When we began working with HEP in 2018, the program needed to communicate complex conservation data and research across two states and many jurisdictions, in formats ranging from printed reports to web pages. For its 2020–2025 Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan, we designed and produced a group of five print and digital publications (State of the Estuary, 2020, Action Agenda, Harbor-Wide Water Quality Report, Environmental Monitoring Plan, NY-NJ-Harbor & Estuary Program Funding Report) on the impact of HEP's conservation goals and its plans for future work. We developed a design system and identity that could flex across those formats and audiences. We explored each dataset and developed visualizations suited to a wide range of indicators, so technical findings read clearly for partners, funders, and the public. That system became the foundation for the 2025–2035 CCMP, and it also informed the State of the Hudson report for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Alongside the plan, we've designed maps and tools that help HEP's partners and the public find and use estuary data.

Paddling Guide to the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary: A printed map and guide for canoeing and kayaking. The dense geometry of the street grid and built environment contrasts with the organic colors and shapes of the water, drawing attention to the estuary as a distinct environment within the city. 2021
